Camera Critters Saturday

This weeks Critter pics were taken at Australia Zoo on a visit only months before Steve Irwin died. The family had a friend visiting from England so we drove up for the day. Australia Zoo is located just over an hour north of Brisbane. I will have more zoo animals next week.

SkyWatch Friday

This weeks picture for SkyWatch Friday comes from my trip to Vietnam in 2007. We spent a night on a junk boat cruising Halong Bay in the north, a very beautiful spot. During the first afternoon I climbed to the top of this mountain.

You can just see about half way up on the left there is a midpoint viewing platform and some stairs.

It looks so steep from this angle.

Three or More Tuesday

This is my first posting for Three or More Tuesday. The picture is of some wombats found at Australia Zoo. Wambats are large burrowing mammals found only in Australia. They live in a chamber of burrows and mostly come out at night to eat grasses, leaves and roots. They are marsupial, meaning, they carry their young in a pouch for about 5 months.

Ruby Tuesday

For this weeks post for Ruby Tuesday I am posting pics of my classic car. This is "Wilma" a 1958 Wolseley 1500. I have had her for just over 2 years and keep her on a restricted registration, which means I must be a member of a classic car club and can only drive her on club functions and outings.
Hasn't she got a great colour? Wolseley's were made by the British Motor Corporation (BMC) but the 1500 was only assembled in Australia for about 18 months.

Camera Critters Saturday

Camera CrittersThis weeks Camera Critter pics are Koalas taken at Australia Zoo, the home of the late Steve Irwin.

The koala is Australia's favourite marsupial. It gets it name from an Aboriginal word meaning 'no drink'. 90% of its hydration comes from it's diet of Eucalyptus leave (or gum leaves). It only drinks when ill or when leaves are too dry eg. drought. There are hundreds of varieties of Eucalypt trees but the koala preferrs to only eat from about 10 varieties. Due to their poor low-energy diet koalas have a low-energy lifestyle and sleep for up to 20 hours a day, much like a cat. A baby koala (joey) will remain in their mothers pouch until they are about 22 weeks old when they will take their first look at the outside world. Between 22-36 weeks they spend more and more time out of the pouch until they can no longer fit back in. They are weaned at about 12 months old and become totally independant at about 18 months.

SkyWatch Friday

My images for SkyWatch Friday come from my trip to Lake Tahoe (USA) in 2005. I spent a morning hot air ballooning over the lake. This is the only place in the world where the balloon takes off and lands on a boat rather than from the ground during the warmer months. I was lucky as this was the last week of the season for the boat trip and doubley lucky becasue that day was the first that week where they were able to launch the balloon. The afternoon was spent driving the circumfrance of the lake where the second image was taken.

I will post more shots from this trip in Watery Wednesday and Scenic Sunday over the next week.
